A North Dakota Operator tasked Workover Solutions (WOS) to drillout five wells in the Bakken. The challenges included high downhole temperatures (TVD – 10,608’); potential high friction through curve and lateral; and consistent loss of returns throughout the drillout operation.

The bottom hole assembly (BHA) setup for all five wells was identical. The Terminator T1000 EaZyDrillTM was utilized on one well, and a competitor extended reach tool (ERT) was run on the other four wells.

Despite having a slower open to close time, the EaZyDrill exhibited faster wash times, open to close time per 1,000 lateral feet, and plugs drilled per hour.

All five wells had a similar measured depth (MD) of approximately 21,000’, however, the EaZyDrill was used to drill out 66 plugs versus 41 plugs in the remaining four wells with the competitor ERT.

The benefits of the EaZyDrill are vast, and it can be used for both coiled tubing and stick pipe extended-reach applications.

It reduces downhole friction by creating pressure pulsation and lateral force, maximizing weight transfer to the drill bit with a coiled tubing drill string and extending the reach of the coil tubing operation. This is preferred over a piston type ERT as it reduces the amount of axial vibrations and reduces the bending forces that cause premature tool failure. These vibrations can be backed up with empirical data from the WOS InterrogatR tool which measures these at the bit during a drill out operation.

It prevents buckling in the coil tubing string; has a built-in flex sub to help relieve bending stresses; is rated for up to 5 barrels per minute (bpm) to allow for maximum hole cleaning; and has the ability to pump both beads and diverter through the tool to further aid in operation.

The EaZyDrill’s metal-to-metal rotor and stator have a high chemical resistance and a broad temperature range, making it one of the most versatile tools in the WOS ERT line, providing long-lasting performance and durability. Excluding the elastomer in the power section eliminates the risk of stator chunking and elastomeric damage.

The chart below shows the performance statistics.
